“Wow, this…this is really what I like about movies…the image and the look and the camera angles.”

BIO:

Marie Ilene’s career in film began with a redirect from her high school acting teacher. At the performing arts school, she was the actor trying to direct the other actors on the stage. When her teacher suggested she try directing instead, she admitted that she saw the performance just a little bit differently – as if through the lens of a camera.

“I immediately realized that I saw the play like a movie…I was directing the actors but I wanted a close-up. Like [as I was] doing their blocking and stuff like that, I was thinking in shots.”

From there, Ilene went on to film school, graduating from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts with a concentration in cinematography and moved out to Los Angeles to further her career, working on various camera and electric crews, creating documentary short films for labor unions, and a documentary feature, Bombshells and Dollies (2019).

CREDITS/AWARDS:

A couple of Ilene’s film credits as cinematographer include Bombshells and Dollies (for which she also served as associate producer), and “The New Adult” (Web Series).

“Basically, they just hired me to shoot, like, one interview with a pretty prominent pinup girl, and I was kind of…in love with the project right away…”
